In 1912 Mr. Don Juwanis Karunarathna donated a land of 3 acres on the Colombo
- Negombo road at the heart of Maththumagala to construct the building of the school, and today
this has became one of the leading Buddhist School in the area. Later on Mr. Karunarathana
became the Principal of the school. It was name as the Maththumagala Maha Vidyalaya & it was
uplifted as the Karunarathna Buddhist Maha Vidyalaya.
The school was guided by many Principals & also from 2011 Mrs. K.A.Nijamali
Palika is in dedicated service for about 1700 students.
